​​While fishing is generally safe, anything can happen on the water.  It is vitally important that everyone be made aware of the following safety tips and regulations.

 

WHAT KIND OF FISHING LICENSE DO I NEED?

Recreational anglers must have a Texas fishing license and saltwater endorsement to possess in state water any fish taken in federal waters or possess fish on a vessel in the tidal waters of Texas.  However, there are several types of license available for non-residents and even one-day all-water licenses that let you fish anywhere.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO FISH ON GALVESTON BAY?
The best time to fish Galveston bay depends on the fish species you are after but, as a general rule, the months of May thru September is when fish are most active. However, the months of October and November are great for Flounder. The months of February, March host the annual Black Drum run and the months of May thru July can be absolutely

action packed for Speckled Trout.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON THE WATER?
No matter what kind of activity you engage in, if you are on the water, protecting against the sun’s rays is extremely important. The intensity of the sun is magnified when you are out on the water and keeping sun block on exposed areas is paramount. I have spent most of my life on the water and unfortunately did not always respect the sun as much as I should have. I have paid for that with damaged skin and weakening vision.  Always wear UV protective clothing and sunglasses and apply sunblock to areas not covered by clothing.

FIRST AID ON THE WATER?
It is always a good idea to be prepared for injuries while on the water.  Injuries can occur when wading and it's easy to trip and fall on oyster reef or step into submerged objects that can be covered with sharp barnacles. It is very important to keep any cuts and scrapes cleaned as quickly as possible.

WHAT IS A TEXAS SLAM?
Texas slam just like the pelagic grand slam is comprised of three fish species. In Galveston bay a Texas slam is when you catch a keeper flounder, redfish, and speckled trout all on the same trip.
